American musician, composer, and academic John Maus is regarded as one of the most influential cult figures of the past two decades, with music shaped by nostalgic synthesizers, primitive rhythms, and existential themes. Often associated with Ariel Pink and the Animal Collective circle, Maus reinterprets the aesthetics of 80s synth-pop with a sincere, dark, and irony-free approach.
Reaching a wide cult following with Songs (2006), Love Is Real (2007), and especially We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves (2011), John Maus handles pop structures through an academic discipline while delivering uncontrolled, physical, and intensely energetic performances on stage.
